On Tuesday 14 March 2023, CERHA HEMPEL hosted another instalment of its Global Perspectives series in the Bel Etage. This time, the subject was Europe. The Head of Representation of the European Commission in Austria, Prof. Dr. Martin Selmayr, gave a talk entitled "Europe – A sense of place".
Dr. Benedikt Spiegelfeld (Of Counsel, CERHA HEMPEL) kicked the evening off with a talk entitled "We all are overnewsed, but underinformed". Professor Selmayr has been representing the European Commission as the head of its mission in Austria for more than three years and therefore knows our European policy very well indeed. He has been involved in European integration and expansion for many years in several leading positions in the European Commission and is therefore well placed to provide first-hand information on Europe.
Afterwards, Prof. Dr. Selmayr gave some very interesting insights into the European project, including all of its challenges and opportunities. In light of current geopolitical developments, he emphasized the importance of the European Union and addressed its future relevance to solving future issues.
In the lively discussion that ensued, which was moderated by Dr. Benedikt Spiegelfeld, Prof. Dr. Selmayr fielded numerous questions from the audience and did an excellent job of explaining the policies of the European Commission.
At the subsequent get-together, guests took the opportunity to exchange information among themselves and to talk with the EU expert in person, who showed himself to be a highly competent and fervent European with outstanding language skills.
In spite of the numerous challenges that Europe is currently facing, the evening provided all members of the audience with an optimistic outlook for the future.
