DAC Regulation "Carnuntum"

The Law on Wine (Weingesetz) provides various designations depending on the origin of the grapes. "Regional wines" must originate from a single wine-growing region (Weinland, Bergland, Steierland), whereas "quality wines" need to be grown in one of 17 wine-growing areas. If a quality wine meets certain additional criteria typical for the area, the designation DAC ("Districtus Austriae Controllatus") may be added. These typical criteria are determined in regulations issued by the competent Federal Minister. The DAC Regulation "Carnuntum" has taken effect on 1 October 2019 (BGBl II 2019/284). To use the term "DAC" in connection with the wine-growing area Carnuntum, it is necessary (among other things) that white wine consists of the grapes Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc or Grüner Veltliner, whereas red wines must be produced from Zweigelt or Blaufränkisch. In total, there are now DAC regulations for 14 Austrian wine-growing areas.
