House cricket authorised as a novel food

Regulation (EU) 2015/2283

Under the Novel Food Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2015/2283), novel foods require EU-wide authorisation prior to being placed on the market.

On 10 February 2022, the European Commission adopted a Commission Implementing Regulation authorising the placing on the market of the house cricket (Acheta domesticus) as a novel food. Therefore – following the recent authorisation of the migratory locust (Locusta migratoria) – frozen, dried and powder (ground) forms of the house cricket are now also a "novel food".
